9. Velada de Santa Lucía

International encounter of contemporary art organized by Clemencia Labin

Santa Lucía is the name given to one of the most popular neighbourhoods of modern-day Maracaibo, Venezuela. A small historic enclave dotted with colourful, colonial houses which, since 2001, acts as a meeting point for artists, away from the museum context, using spaces of every-day life adapted to exhibit contemporary art.

During our last “velada”, in March of this year, there were 245 participating artists occupying 38 houses and their adjacent areas.

For three consecutive days these spaces were transformed into galleries in which a great number of artistic trends stood side by side, in harmony, with the local inhabitants, thus creating the great collective work called “Velada de Santa Lucía”.

After eight years of experience, we have seen the need to set up a foundation in Germany to facilitate the cultural exchange between the various countries. We also thought it wise, considering the rapid growth of the last few years, to put together a manual or set of rules in order to speed up the selection process and to improve efficiency in the organizing of the event.

Rules

Participants

All artists are welcome, regardless of age, nationality or artistic expression.

Subject Matter

Open to all types of proposals, one important criterion being that the project is conceived (or adapted) with the area of Santa Lucía in mind. It is a democratic process in which we judge not only the quality of the work, but more importantly the commitment of each of the participants to the Velada. The quality control of the work is left up to each of the contributing artists or curators, as we are convinced that they are the ones most interested in carrying out the work to the highest standards.

Presentation

The projects, together with personal details and C.V. are to be presented in PDF or JPEG format no greater than 4MB, preferably before January 15, to the organizers of the Velada Santa Lucía 2009. Please send to the following addresses.
